Week of February 7th

Announcements:

**The Jackson Hole Historical Society will be visiting us this Friday for a look back into the archived photos, stories and documents of early Teton County!

** On Friday, we had a captivating visit by author/historian and namesake of our media center: Ken Thomasma.

** This week students will be working on the second round of debates, writing historical fiction journal entries while studying local Jackson Hole history.

Monday:
1. Debate Reseach: Students research both pro and con of the topics they selected as a class.
2. Review of instructions and goals for the historical fiction journal entry: This will be done tomorrow in class using notes from author Ken Thomasma's visit.
HW: Optional: Prepare an outline for tomorrow's writing assignment on a 3*5 notecard.
(Note: Because of Author Ben Mikaelson's visit tomorrow during 7th period - 7th period will be taking the written assessment today.)

Tuesday:
1. Assessment of Lewis & Clark activities: Students write historical fiction journal entries from the point of view of one of the L&C expedition members...including the dog!
Note: 7th period, the entire 8th grade attends Ben Mikaelson's author talk.

Wednesday:
1. A focus on Periodical Style: JH Historical Society Newsletter: Davey vs. Teton Jackson. We will be reading this together with an eye for historical content and periodical style. (We'll be starting of the Westward Expansion Periodical Project on Thursday).

Thursday:
1. Students will be looking at Old West Newspapers made by 8th grade students during the past few years. These will be used as examples for both what to do and what not to do during the coming 2 weeks. Students will be asked to make select a research topic by monday.
2. Media Center resources: Students will have the opportunity to browse through our rich collection of westward expansion resources. This will help them select a topic that is personally interesting. Research begins Monday!

Friday:
1. Jackson Hole Historical Society outreach to present to classes!

First Week of February

Announcements:

**Great job on Constitution Essays! Students are really developing their expository writing skills.
** Author Ken Thomasma visits on Friday to speak about the Lewis & Clark Expedition from the perspective of its 13 year-old guide, Sacajawea.

Monday:
1. Current Event - We watched a news brief on the Egyptian crisis and made connections to the US Constitution Unit. Open notes quiz on this info on Wednesday.
2. Intro to Westward Expansion Unit - Mountain Man Vernacular and Student Pre-Knowledge.
3. Students select debate topics for our second round of debates!
HW: Louisiana Purchase Geography Questions: Due Tues.

Tuesday:
1. HW: Check, Share, Discuss.
2. We are in the iMac lab doing a Lewis & Clark Webquest activity.

Wednesday
1. Complete Webquest in iMac lab
2. Current Event Quiz: Open Notes
3. Depending on student progress: Debate topic research and preparation

Thursday:
1. Students will see the next historical fiction assignment: Write a journal entry from the perspective of Sacajawea, York, Seaman the dog, or Captain Clark! They will be taking notes during tomorrow's presentation to use in preparation for this short historical fiction essay next week.
2. A look at some primary journal entries and sketches: These will be used as examples for student's own field observations next week.

Friday:
Author and Historian Ken Thomasma joins us to discuss his books regarding the Lewis & Clark Expedition!
