Week of September 24th

Please Note – Due to professional development for social studies and science classes, there will be no history class on Monday (Nor will there be science class on Tuesday). Instead, on Monday, girls and boys will be separating and working with health teachers on sex ed. and drug awareness. Monday: Girls stay in room 101 and Boys go to Mr. Poduska’s classroom. Girls work with Mrs. Yeoman -- sex education, and boys will work with Curren Seeley on drug and alcohol awareness. Tuesday: 1. Whole group review of the information on HW that was due on Friday regarding the US political spectrum and the general election process. We will process and prepare for quiz on Friday. 2. Small groups will be reading and examining demographic information about the effect of smallpox and other foreign diseases on American Indian populations. HW Due Thursday: Please read Changes on the Plains, p. 14-15 and answer comprehension questions. Wednesday: 1. American Indian Boarding Schools – Leveled readings in Color Groups We will be reading about the details and implications of American Indian Boarding Schools. We’ll be looking closely at the structure of these expository texts in searching for reading strategies to help us with informational texts. Thursday: 1. HW Check and Share – Students will be turning these in for assessment of comprehension. 2. Insult or Honor? Indian Mascots and Logos inspire strong feelings on all sides. Students will be reading an article and preparing details for both pro and con categories of this current day debate topic. Friday: 1. US Political Spectrum Quiz 2. If all readings and activities are completed from this week, we will be analyzing various media center resources and looking at video clips regarding the Trail of Tears Indian relocation tragedy. Next Week we are lucky to have Willie Leclaire, Eastern Shoshoni Tribal Councilman coming on Friday and we also formally begin our Historical Fiction Storybook projects on Monday.
