Week if November 26th


Welcome back from the holiday weekend. I hope you were able to rest, relax and enjoy your families and friends! This week our focus will be geography of the East Coast/13 Colonies and the Colonial Slave Trade.  If you missed the quiz on Tuesday, please take it this week.
Extra Help or Make-up Times:  Before school between 8 and 9am; at lunch by appointment, 1st or 2nd period by appointment.

Monday:
1.    Maps and Demographics of the Slave Trade – Students will begin by analyzing some the geography and staggering statistics of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
2.    We’ll be reading and from A Young People’s History  p. 19-33, on Colonial Slavery. Students will be annotating using the Thinking Like Historians framework that helps us be critical historical readers.
3.    Quizzes returned and reviewed from last Tuesday.

Tuesday:
1.    Colonial Geography – We’ll look at British American political and geographic borders.  We’ll also examine the causes of various colonial settlements.  Geography Quiz on Friday
2.    Groups of 5 (one student for each category) will share their Thinking Like Historians annotations and we will then share out as a whole group. Our purpose is to both see what we’ve learned from this text and to identify how reading through an historical lens is a special and different task than simply reading.
HW: Due tomorrow – Do pre-reading vocab for tomorrow’s article.

Wednesday:
1.    Geography Review GameWe’ll begin with this interactive game that involves fly swatters and maps.
2.    HW Check – We’ll review pre-reading vocab together.
3.     Stories of the Slaves – In reading groups, students will be reading the biographies of three African Slaves.  How were their lives and treatment dissimilar to the promises held generations earlier in the Declaration of Independence? Which Thinking Like Historians categories are most applicable to these biographies?

Thursday:
1.    SIGH Primary Image Analysis – Slave Ship
2.    Review for Quiz tomorrow – As a group we will organize this week’s notes and geography details for tomorrow’s short assessment.

Friday:
1.     Brief Quiz: Slavery Vocabulary & Colonial Geography
2.     Video Clip and Discussion:  Amistad
