Week of October 3rd

Monday, October 3rd
1. Current Event: Saving Native Language – Lakota is reinforced to a young generation of Sioux through the classic Berentsain Bears cartoon. Students will read, take notes and discuss. Open-notes quiz on Wednesday.
2. Read-Aloud: Sheman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diaries of a Part Time Indian. We will be reading to further our understanding of historical fiction. What details are true and what parts belong in the fictional craft category?
3. If time allows, finish news interview clip. Sherman Alexie speaks about being an American Indian best-selling author!
Tuesday, October 4th
We are in the media Center today. Students have been gathering information from our media center’s American Indian collection to help them write a piece of historical fiction. This is our 3rd of 5 visits. Our goal is to complete notes/citations for 2 resources. What details do we target to create authentic and engaging historical fiction?
Wed October 5th
1. Open-notes Current Event Quiz: Bears help Save Lakota (Notes from Monday)
Character Sketch Modeling & Drafting: We will be using The Unbreakable Code” to explore the process of creating historically accurate, yet interesting characters for students’ storybook projects.
2. Begin character sketches in class. Students will be identifying and fleshing-out protagonists for their historical fiction storybook projects.
HW: For Friday: Bring in a completed character sketch in paragraph form. Typed, 12 font MLA style.

Thurs, October 6th
We are in the media Center today. Students have been gathering information from our media center’s American Indian collection to help them write a piece of historical fiction.
Friday, October 7th
1. HW check/Share: Students will share their character sketches in small groups. Volunteers will read theirs aloud. What makes an engaging historical fiction character?
2. Plot Summaries! With only one day of research left, and our protagonists coming into their own, it’s time to work on the plot of our historical fiction pieces! We will focus on elements of fiction, including RAD – Reflection/Action/Dialogue
