Week of October 31st

Greetings! We had a great day of cookies and reciprocal reading our historical fiction books on Friday, as well as a really fun quarterly recognition. The media center will be displaying a lot of our history projects for the next couple of weeks, so be sure and check it out! Parent-teacher conferences are on Monday and Wednesday next week. If parents would like to schedule for a different day after school, please send an email! dwells@tcsd.org

Monday:
1. Quarter 1 reflection and quarter 2 goal setting. Students will assess their progress towards the goals they set in the first week of school and create new goals for the next nine weeks.
2. History mission statement! Students will draft a statement of purpose to post in the room. This will help remind us of why we are here each day.
3. Debate topics: Students will look over lists to begin choosing 3 topics for our first Lincoln-Douglas style debate.

Tuesday:
1. Research day for debate topics. Students will collect both pro and con data from vetted websites and articles in preparation for our first debate tomorrow.

Wednesday:
1. Lincoln-Douglas style debate! We will review the rules and limitations of this debate style, which is used by the JHHS speech and debate team. Before we begin, we will discuss how debate fits into a US History curriculum, and educated debate’s importance in our Nation’s development. Students will receive a small current event grade based on research preparedness and public speaking for participating in today’s debate.

Thursday:
1. Critically Interpreting US Textbooks. We will continue a look at interpretations of European exploration of the Americas by comparing student textbook entries of the same event from the 1800s, 1950s and 1990s.
Friday:
No school for students! Teachers will be in professional development activities today.
