Week of October 24th

Greetings! This is the final week of quarter one. Final historical fiction storybooks are due by the end of the day on Tuesday. There will be an after school work session in our normal classroom on Monday for students who need to take care of final details. Find the week’s agenda below.

Monday and Tuesday:
1. Monday: Homework check – Students were asked to write a 1-2 paragraph author’s note for their historical fiction pieces.
2. We will be using this class time to complete historical fiction storybooks. Most students will be completing layout and design, compiling a works cited list and making final edits to their text.

Wednesday:
We are moving onward into European exploration of the Americas.
1. SIGHT primary image analysis – Columbus’ landing on HispaƱola.
2. The Columbian Exchange! We’ll look at the impact of exchanging food, fauna and disease as Europe collides with America.
HW: Please bring in a lead (front page or primary link) news story from National or International news and be prepared to present the main topic and 3-5 details to the class on Thursday. Bring article and brief notes, or highlight/underline in your article.

Thursday:
1. Critically Interpreting US Textbooks. We will continue a look at interpretations of European exploration of the Americas by comparing student textbook entries of the same event from the 1800s, 1950s and 1990s.
2. Current Events: Small groups will read, summarize and present details of major national and international stories to the whole class.

Friday:
Book walk! Most of students’ final historical fiction storybooks will be assessed and returned by today. Students will read each other’s books, leaving feedback for the authors while learning about other American Indian topics. This is both a celebration and an opportunity for reciprocal learning!

**There is a shortened schedule today with Quarterly Recognition activities in the afternoon.
