Week of May 7th
Monday:
1. Civil War characters – Students will do a quick inquiry into several of the key players on both sides of the Civil War: Mathew Brady, Pauline Cushman, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses Grant, Jefferson Davis, Frederick Douglas and of course Abraham Lincoln.
2. Map review activity (Quiz on Wednesday).
3. Independent Lit. circle reading and annotations. Be prepared for tomorrow!
HW: Due tomorrow – Come prepared with high quality responses on role-sheets and annotations.
Tuesday: (Classes are shortened today due to a statewide assessment in writing in the morning).
1. Literature Circle Day: Students will come prepared to participate in Lit. circle discussions and share their new knowledge about the Civil War period with peers. They will need to have completed their role sheet and 5 detailed annotations.
Wednesday:
1. We have a geography quiz today! Place the 33 United States on a map and label Union, Border state or Confederacy.
2. Shared reading part 1: An overview of critical moments in the Civil War: Gettysburg, The Gettysburg Address, The Emancipation Proclamation, Sherman’s “Total War”, the Fall of Richmond, Surrender at Appomattox.
Thursday:
2. Lit. Circle Activity Day: Students will get together in with Lit Circle groups and create a presentable poem, song, game or image that represents their novel. Quick presentations in the last 1/3 of class.
Friday:
1. Complete shared reading from Wednesday: An Overview of important moments of the Civil War.
2. We will continue our viewing of scenes from the movie “Glory”. This week, we examine the early struggles of African American’s participation in the Union infantry.
3. Lit. Circle Novels – Independent reading and preparation for next week’s lit. circle activities.
