Week of April 8th

8th
Welcome back!
·             We’ll refocus and look at a timeline of our progress with the Westward Expansion Newspaper Project.

·             We’ll ask the question What is journalistic writing style? Students will be examining various modern and antique newspapers to help answer this question


Student/Teacher research conferences – Students who are finished research will begin organizing and drafting research based newspaper articles.

9th
Writer’s Workshop Format:
·             The goal is to write 3 research based newspaper articles related to students’ chosen Westward Expansion topics.

·             Students will be in groups based on their writing progress. (Outlining; drafting; revision/editing; peer editing).

    *HW Assigned: Work on articles outside of class. Demonstrate progress to the teacher by Thursday using provided checklist and writing.

10th
Writer’s Workshop Format:
·             We’ll start today by revisiting student work from past years, trying to answer the question: How much research detail should be included in high-quality historical fiction writing?

Continued from yesterday:
·             The goal is to write 3 research based newspaper articles related to students’ chosen Westward Expansion topics.

·             Students will continue in groups based on their writing progress. (Outlining; drafting; revision/editing; peer editing).

11th
Writer’s Workshop Format: Final Day
·             The goal is to write 3 research based newspaper articles related to students’ chosen Westward Expansion topics.

·             Students will be in groups based on their writing progress. (Outlining; drafting; revision/editing; peer editing).

    *HW Due: Students needed to do some writing outside of class. In student/teacher conferences, students will demonstrate progress to the teacher using provided checklist and their writing work.

12th
Photoshop Mini-Lesson

·             Goal: To successfully Photoshop yourself into a historically relevant image that will appear in your newspaper!

·             First, we’ll quickly review past student work.

·             Then, students will get a mini-lesson and demo of Photoshop.

Students will spend the rest of class using historical databases to locate, cite and save a historically relevant photo into their Photoshop folder. If time allows they will start the process of integrating their own digital image into the historical image.
