1. We’ll continue with our reading of The Unbreakable Code: Navajo Code Talkers, by Sara Hoagland Hunter. Today, small groups will be taking a section of this story for a close-read. We will continue to define what elements make the book part of the historical fiction genre.

2. Insult or Honor?  Students will be completing a reading/notes on the use of American Indian mascots by athletic teams and school districts. Next week we will have a formal debate on this topic.

1.  Students will be introduced to our historical fiction storybook assignment. They will be evaluating past student projects on the rubric with which they will be graded.  We will have our media center non-fiction collection available to help students choose a topic related to historical or modern American Indians.



1. Using our media center non-fiction and electronic media, students will  conduct quick surface research to aid them in choosing a focus area for their storybooks.  

2. American Indian Content Review for test tomorrow.  Last week, students reflected on our various learnings and materials and drafted their own test questions.
Students will be working in small groups based on how they rated themselves on the various content areas.

1. American Indian content test. Many of the questions were created by students themselves, based on our readings and other classroom activities such as photo-analysis.

2.  Media center guest Ms. Swiggum will be in class for 25 minutes teaching students how to create an annotated bibliography that will link their research sources with content info within their storybooks.  We will follow up with this next week in the media center.

1. Current Event Share – Students share out briefly in small groups. Essential question: “What new debate evidence did I find? “ Student work will be collected and assessed for completion.

3. Onward with research for the Historical Fiction storybook project. We’ll start in the media center today.  Mini-Lesson: What kinds of research details will help me write my storybook?

HW provided today -Due Friday: Current Event – Locate an additional article on the Indian Mascot debate issue and document pros/cons using provided organizer.

HW: Prepare for our assessment tomorrow.
