Week of September 30th

1. Students will learn the Lincoln-Douglass debate format and practice mini-table debates in small groups using the current event debate research they completed last week.

On Wednesday we’ll have our in-class debate. The winning team will compete against Mr. P’s classes.

2. Students will finish setting up “noodltools” citation accounts and will have a final opportunity to browse online and media center information to help them select a research topic.  Formal research begins tomorrow.



We are in the media center today and off to the races with the research portion of our historical fiction storybooks.

Students will get info and a demo on a variety of subscription databases purchased by the school district, from WYLD to ABC-CLIO.

Our emphasis our time in the media center this week is to have all students understand and independently employ research habits and skiils that will be expected in High School.


In-class Lincoln-Douglass style debate! Resolved: The use of American Indian Mascots should be ended.
Students will form debate teams; They will debate the side they are assigned by coin toss.

We are back in the media center today.

1. Shoshone speaker Willie LeClaire will be presenting to history students today. He’ll meet groups during 1st and 2nd periods according to teaching team.
Mr. LeClaire consulted with the Smithsonian in D.C. and with the JH Historical Society Museum on their Shoshone exhibits.

2. Later, during normal class time, we’ll debrief the presentation and move forward with research.  Students will be in mini-conferences with Mr. Wells to check the progress and organization of their research.

Next week, we’ll conclude research and move into writing historical fiction!  
HW – As a research week, there is no formal HW, but there will be an informal research check on Friday.





Informal check-in: Students should have 2 detailed sets of research notes with citations.
