A big week for research projects

Special Announcements:

1. Students wishing to "earn" points back on their Early Explorers quiz may read and take bullet-style notes pgs. 45-49 in the Text. This is the material assessed on that quiz.

2. I will be holding writing help sessions from 2:40 to 3:40 after school Monday from 10/15 until Thursday 10/18. Students must have parent permission and an arranged ride home to participate. Students concerned with their projects' progress are encouraged to attend!

Week of Oct 15th -- A big week for research projects! Last week students began outlines using "Inspiration" software and also completed a works cited using "Noodletools", a software used across the secondary curriculum.

Monday 10/15 - Student News, current events. Students watch, take guided notes and discuss. Then students will work to complete their outlines. Some students will be in and out of the media center or online researching. Databases are preferred to websites, although students have been explicitly taught how to find and evaluate quality sites.
HW -- Using provided guided writing sheets, students begin to write introductions and beginning paragraphs of research paper in preparation for Tuesday's class.

Tuesday 10/16 - Parenthetical citation -- examples of quality in-text citation are shown and discussed. The "noodletools" software can help students set up their parenthetical documentation, and this link will be reviewed.
Students will then begin to write their rough drafts.
HW -- Write second and third paragraphs at home using guided Jane Shaffer writing organizers.

Wednesday 10/17 Writing workshop -- Example student writing is displayed, edited and discussed in peer groups. Students then continue to write rough drafts using HW from the previous night.

Thursday 10/18 -- Depending on student progress, either in-class research project work OR reading and discussion of De Las Casas' diary entries from Early Spanish Colonialism. We will analyze for historical content as a primary document and place in context. We will also use as a note-taking practice in selecting most important details for notes.

Friday 10/19 -- Meet up with Mr. Yazzs' classes, watch discovery video on modern exploration and compare and contrast with early exploration of the Americas.

Rough Drafts due Monday!! Students must prepare rough draft for peer-editing and have their notes and works cited attached.

Have a great week!
