8th Grade Student Forum -- Monday -- 8:45-10:00 am in the small gym. 3rd period will not have History because of this event.
Last week students chose topics regarding Westward Expansion -- Essentially the US between the Louisiana Purchase and the Final Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. We have been studying various themes revolving around Manifest Destiny and the US Identity as the nation expanded. Students are in the process of researching their topics and creating time-period periodicals in historical fiction style. This week will be an intense week of research in class and in the media center. If parents would like a copy of the required parts and the grading rubric for this 8th Grade US History Standard, please e-mail and I will send one out!
Some important check points this week:
Monday 2/25 -- Students must show 3 non-internet sources with sufficient notes to compose 3 periodical-style articles. This will count as a progress grade.
Wednesday 2/27 -- Students will have finished a hand-drawn overview (example in class on Monday) for HW, to be checked at the start of class. Media Center specialist Jackie Riley walks students though creating their own, unique newspaper templates that will play host to the required 3 articles, 8 want ads, 3 advertisements, 1 crossword puzzle, 5 geographic references. Many students will create additional newspaper parts such as social columns or horoscopes.
Thursday, 2/28 -- Most students will have finished their research and should be typing articles etc. Students will need to create a separate works cited.
