Week of September 13th

Welcome back from a beautiful weekend!

Announcements: Back to school night will be this Thursday, September 16th at 6:30 PM. Parents and guardians will be able to follow their student's schedule, meet teachers and learn a little about the class curricula.

IMPORTANT:
This Friday, September 17th, the 8th grade will be visiting the Colter Bay Indian Arts Museum as part of the US History Curriculum. Students will need to bring their own lunch and warm clothing, as some of the rotations will be outside. We will be leaving JHMS at 8am and returning around 2:15pm.

Also: Guest expert - Child and adolescent author Lydia Hudusko will be in classes on Thursday!

Weekly Agenda:

Monday, 13th:
1. Student News and Class Discussion on the remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
2. Students will be mapping geographical regions of N. America. Discussion will center on how these geo-climatic regions may have helped shaped culture and language groups.
3. Student Jigsaw: Using media center non-fiction, region groups will be conducting a survey of their geographic region. What is the land and climate like? What tribes of historical American Indians lived there? How did these groups' cultures reflect their climates?

Tuesday, 14th:
1. Region groups complete collection and organization of jigsaw info and prepare to present.
2. Student groups present to the class. Peers will collect information on other regions from group presentations.
HW: Complete American Indian/Regions chart using supplementary readings.

Wednesday, 15th:
1. Check and review HW's
2. Read aloud - "Life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation" - Group note-taking using inspiration. What is reservation life like of Sioux kids living on a reservation
3. Examination of US Census data for American Indian groups.
HW: Prepare for quiz tomorrow! (See below for details)

Thursday, 16th:
1. Quiz: Geo-Climatic Regions and American Indian Tribes
2. Adolescent Book author Lydia Hudusko will be running a quick workshop on historical genres: Non Fiction, Historical Fiction etc. This ties into our first US History Standard.

Friday, 17th:
Colter Bay American Indian Arts Museum. Students will rotate in small groups to 5 different presentations, including a visit and talk with Artist-in-residence D.G. House.
Bring a lunch and warm clothing!
