Students did a great job tackling the challenging Declaration of Independence essay prompts!!! This year’s essays were excellent. The end of the second academic quarter is January 20th, please take the time to check power school and make up missing work before the 18th. Quarterly Recognition is also this Friday, the 20th. 8th grade will be having fun at Snow King. Please dress appropriately for your activity!
Monday:
Martin Luther King Day – No school for kids!
Tuesday:
1. Dr. King – We will read a section of the infamous “I Have a Dream” speech draw connections to King’s mention of the Declaration and the US Constitution.
2. Decoding the preamble of the US Constitution. Students will paraphrase and “perform” the preamble in an effort to understand why it was created.
Wednesday:
1. Outline of articles I-III of the US Constitution. Why was a separation of powers in the best interest of our young Nation? Is this form of government still successful? Students will identify checks and balances between the 3 branches of government using a visual organizer.
Thursday:
1. All students will be researching and preparing for Constitutional Issues debates against Mr. Poduska’s history classes. The winners from last week’s debates will compete against Mr. P’s classes. Topics for this Lincoln-Douglas style debate include limits to the 2nd Amendment and Abolishing the Electoral College system of electing the President. Students will use a variety of online and print resources to collect useful pros and cons on these two debate resolutions.
Friday:
Shortened schedule – In classes we will be in final preparation for the first round of the Poduska-Wells Constitutional Issues Debates.
**After lunch we go to Snow King for a well-deserved quarterly recognition.
