Week of January 23rd

Welcome back from the snowy weekend! We are moving forward with our study of the Constitution as a map of government and foundation for personal protections. On Wednesday we’ll be debating with Mr. Poduska’s classes, focusing on Constitutional issues. There will be 3 branches of government quiz on Thursday. This will be the first grade of the 3rd academic quarter.
Monday:
1. Check debate research from Thursday and Friday
2. Constitution Scavenger Hunt – Students will find critical details from the first three articles of the US Constitution.
3. Begin Checks and Balances activity.
HW: Finish checks and balances questions for tomorrow.

Tuesday:

1. Check and share HW
2. Students will create diagrams of the 3 branches of government and the various checks and balances that create a separation of power.
3. Final prep of research and format for tomorrow’s debates

Wednesday:
Two teams of 5 students will be debating against teams from Mr. Poduska’s classes. The format is Lincoln-Douglas, which includes cross-examinations and rebuttals. Resolution 1: Some restrictions to the 2nd amendment are needed to keep Americans safer. Resolution 2: The Electoral College system of electing the president should be replaced with a direct vote of the people.
HW: Review 3 branches materials for the quiz tomorrow!

Thursday:
1. 3 Branches of government quiz: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of how the Constitution establishes a separation of powers in its first 3 articles.
2. The Bill of Rights – Establishing legal protections for citizens. Students will begin their study of the first ten amendments by envisioning scenarios without their protections. Can students guess which amendments would be violated in certain situations?

Friday:
1. Video Clip: Future Fright – Losing the Bill of Rights
2. Student groups will draft mini-skits demonstrating situations where specific amendments have been violated or repealed. Our goal is to present skits to the class towards the end of class on Monday.
