Welcome back from the weekend and thanks to all of the parents and students who made it to conferences. This week we will be transitioning to the Westward Expansion Newspaper Project. There is a quiz on key events of westward expansion on Monday. *** National History Day in-house judging will be happening on Thursday and Friday this week! A congratulation goes out to all NHD students!!
Monday:
1. Quiz – Major events of westward expansion, including details from Ken Thomasma’s visit and the concept of manifest destiny.
2. Students will get instructions on the Westward Expansion Newspaper Project and see dozens of examples of student products from past years.
3. Students will browse through the media center’s impressive non-fiction collection relating to westward expansion topics, and hopefully will choose a topic for their project. (Many students choose topics related to their own family’s historical experiences here in Jackson – this is encouraged!)
HW: Due tomorrow – Select a research topic, if you haven’t already, that fascinates you.
HW Due Monday 3/12 – Geography assignment #2: Texas
Tuesday:
1. Using the Wyoming Newspaper Project and a 19th century online newspaper archive, students will be locating various events and people we have learned about (ex. Gold Rush and John Marshall) in order to examine how newspapers reported these events, what type of periodical language they used, and how 19th century periodicals were organized and laid-out.
Wednesday:
1. We’ll be in the media center today (and every other day for the next week and a half). Students will get a mini-lesson that will refresh them on effective and efficient research skills. During the next week and a half, on days we are in the media center, students will be monitoring and rating their own performance as researchers.
2. With remaining time, students will begin to locate their first resource, finding details that will be help them create an authentic Old West newspaper.
Thursday:
We’ll be in the iMac lab
1. There will be a mini-lesson on efficient and effective online research. We will review the use of our subscription online databases and compare to open-internet searches.
2. Students will continue to gather information useful in the authoring of their Old West newspapers.
Friday:
1. Media Center Research/Note taking continues.
