Monday:
1. Shared Reading: JH News & Guide Woman Brings Memory to Life. This article uses the language of the Gettysburg Address to describe one woman’s contribution in preserving military vet histories.
2. Prepare for 3rd lit circle discussion tomorrow. Read, annotate and prepare roles for meetings.
HW: Due tomorrow – Come prepared with 5 in-depth annotations and completed role sheet!
Tuesday:
Civil War literature circle discussion day: This will be the final small group discussion day. Students are assessed on their academic conversation and preparedness with annotations and role sheets. There is also a self-evaluation component. This should be student-driven discussion based on the text.
Wednesday:
Small groups will be examining Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation as a product and strategy of of the Civil War, as well as an incomplete moral statement and exercise of executive power. We’ll be looking at how it was received in both the North and the South. This activity has several steps and will finish tomorrow.
Thursday:
1. Second half of Emancipation Proclamation activity.
2. Read aloud – Come Juneteenth by Ann Rinaldi – A Texas slave’s perspective on Emancipation.
Friday:
1. Draft Riots in the North and South – We’ll be looking at primary images.
2. African American soldiers – Glory – Part 4
